Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a temporary employment authorization for F-1 students, enabling them to participate in practical training that is an essential component of their academic curriculum. CPT allows students to work off-campus or engage in internships, cooperative education programs, or other types of practical training opportunities. CPT is employer-specific and must be approved by the Designated School Official (DSO) before students begin employment.
Purpose of CPT
The purpose of CPT is to:
• Provide students with real-world experience in their field of study.
• Integrate practical training into the academic program as part of the curriculum.
• Equip students with the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to succeed in their professional careers.
• Meet the requirements of courses, internships, or cooperative education programs listed in the school’s catalog.
Student Eligibility
To participate in CPT, students must meet the following eligibility requirements:
1.F-1 Status
o Must currently hold valid F-1 student status.
2. Academic Standing
o Must be enrolled full-time in a degree program at [School Name].
o Must have completed at least one full academic year (three consecutive quarters) at New Vision Institute.
3. Curricular Requirement
o CPT must be a required or integral part of the student’s academic curriculum. This includes internships, cooperative education, or practical experiences for course credit.
4. Employer-Specific
o CPT authorization is tied to a specific employer, job role, and duration.
5. Course Enrollment
o Must be enrolled in a course that requires practical training as part of the curriculum.
Key Features of CPT
• Full-Time or Part-Time:
o Part-time CPT: 20 hours or fewer per week while school is in session.
o Full-time CPT: More than 20 hours per week during official school breaks or approved periods.
• Paid or Unpaid:
o CPT can be either paid or unpaid, depending on the nature of the training opportunity.
• Duration:
o CPT is approved for the specific duration required to complete the practical training.
How to Apply for CPT
1. Meet with Your Academic Advisor
o Discuss how CPT fits into your academic program and determine your eligibility.
2. Secure an Offer Letter
o Obtain an offer letter from the prospective employer outlining the job title, responsibilities, and duration of employment.
3. Submit the Application
o Complete the CPT application form and submit it along with the employer’s offer letter to the DSO.
4. DSO Authorization
o The DSO will evaluate your application and, if approved, issue an updated I-20 with CPT authorization.
5. Begin Work
o Students can begin their CPT employment only after receiving approval and the updated I-20.
Important Reminders
• CPT must be approved before starting employment.
• Students who engage in full-time CPT for 12 months or more may lose eligibility for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
• Employment must be directly related to the student’s field of study.
